Uva ursi tincture has historically been used for*:
Lower urinary tract
infections, esp. cystitis
Urinary stones or gravel
Bladder and kidney
infections
Blood in the urine
Side effects and contraindications:
Avoid Uva ursi in pregnancy and
lactation as excessive use may cause nausea, vomiting and tinnitus due to the
high levels of tannins
Bearberry works best in
alkaline urine, therefore do not use alongside treatments that would make the
urine acidic
The high tannin levels may
interfere with the absorption of various nutrients and long term use should be avoided.
Not suitable for children under 12.
Active Compounds:
Uva ursi tincture contains arbutin,
which is a phenolic glycoside compound that is converted to hydroquinone in
alkaline urine and is responsible for its antiseptic properties. It has been shown to be effective against E.
coli a common cause of UTI’s; tannins, which give Uva ursi its astringent
properties; flavonoids and resin
.Adult Tincture Dosage:
Take 1.5-3ml of tincture three times a day (based on 1:3 herb to alcohol ratio)
